Unit 12: For and Since (When…? and How Long…?)

A. Використання “for” і “since” для позначення тривалості

  • We’ve been waiting for two hours.
  • Sally has been working here for six months.
“For” + період часу
a long time
two hours
six months
50 years
20 minutes

  • We’ve been waiting since 8 o’clock.
  • Sally has been working here since April.
“Since” + початок періоду
8 o’clock
Monday
April
2001
Christmas
lunchtime
we arrived

3. Порівняння “for” і “since”

“For” “Since”
for two hours since 8 o’clock
for six months since April
for 50 years since 2001

B. Особливі випадки використання “for” і “in”

  • They haven’t had a holiday in ten years.
  • We haven’t seen Tom in a long time.

  • They’ve been married ten years.
  • I’ve known her all my life.

  • They haven’t had a holiday for ten years.

C. “When” і “How Long”

1. “When” із Past Simple

  • When did it start raining?
It started raining an hour ago/at 1 o’clock.

  • When did Joe and Kate first meet?
They first met when they were at school.

2. “How Long” із Present Perfect

How long використовується з Present Perfect, щоб запитати, як довго триває дія.

  • How long has it been raining?
    It’s been raining for an hour/since 1 o’clock.

  • How long have they known each other?
They’ve known each other since they were at school.

D. Конструкції із “It’s been…”

Ми використовуємо конструкції It’s (been)…

  • It’s two years since I last saw Joe.
I haven’t seen Joe for two years.

  • It’s ages since we went to the cinema.
We haven’t been to the cinema for ages.

How long…?”

  • How long is it since Mrs. Hill died?
How long has it been since she died?
