Unit 29: May and Might (1)

A. Використання “may” і “might” для можливостей

1. “May” і “Might”

  • He may be in his office.
  • She might know.

“May not” і “might not” використовуються для вираження можливої неможливості.

  • It may not be true.
  • She might not know.

3. Структура

may/might + be He may be in his office.
may/might + be-ing He might be having lunch.
may/might + дієслово (know/work) She may know.

4. “May be” і “Maybe”

  • It may be true.
  • Maybe. I’m not sure.

B. Використання “may have” і “might have” для минулого

1. “May have” і “Might have”

Ми використовуємо may have і might have, щоб сказати, що щось було можливим у минулому.

  • She may have been asleep.
  • You might have left it at work.

“May not have” і “might not have” для можливих дій, які не відбулися в минулому.

  • She might not have known about it.
  • He may not have been feeling well.

3. Структура

may/might have + been She may have been at home.
may/might have + been-ing He might have been working late.
may/might have + дієслово You might have left it at work.

C. Порівняння з “could”

“Could” іноді використовується як синонім may/might для вираження можливостей.

  • It could be true.
  • You could have left your phone at work.

1. Порівняння “couldn’t” з “may not/might not”

“May not” і “might not” припускають невпевненість.

  • Sarah couldn’t have received my message. Otherwise, she would have replied.
  • She might not have received my message.

May/Might It may/might be true.
May/Might + have She may/might have left.
Couldn’t It couldn’t be true. She couldn’t have known.
