A. Використання “should” після певних дієслів

1. Після дієслів: insist, demand, recommend, suggest, propose

“Should” використовується після цих дієслів для вираження порад, пропозицій або вимог.

Приклади:

  • I insisted that he should apologise.
    (Я наполягав(-ла), щоб він вибачився.)
  • Doctors recommend that everyone should eat plenty of fruit.
    (Лікарі рекомендують усім їсти багато фруктів.)
  • What do you suggest we should do?
    (Що ти пропонуєш нам зробити?)

2. Використання без “should”

У таких реченнях “should” можна пропускати.

Приклади:

  • It’s essential that everyone be here on time.
    (Важливо, щоб усі були тут вчасно.)
  • I insisted that he apologise.
    (Я наполягав(-ла), щоб він вибачився.)

Ця форма називається суб’юнктивом (subjunctive), і вона збігається з інфінітивом без “to”.


3. Використання звичайних форм теперішнього або минулого

Також можна використовувати звичайні форми дієслів:

  • It’s essential that everyone is here on time.
    (Важливо, щоб усі були тут вчасно.)
  • I insisted that he apologised.

B. Використання “should” з прикметниками

1. Після прикметників: strange, odd, funny, typical, natural, interesting, surprised, surprising

“Should” використовується для вираження здивування, дивності або типовості ситуації.

Приклади:

  • It’s strange that he should be late. He’s usually on time.
    (Дивно, що він запізнився. Зазвичай він приходить вчасно.)
  • I was surprised that he should say such a thing.
    (Я був(-ла) здивований(-а), що він сказав таке.)

C. “Should” у умовних реченнях

1. Якщо щось має трапитися (“if something should happen”)

“Should” використовується для вираження можливості з низькою ймовірністю.

Приклади:

  • We have no jobs at present, but if the situation should change, we will contact you.
    (Наразі у нас немає вакансій, але якщо ситуація зміниться, ми зв’яжемося з вами.)

2. Початок речення з “should”

“Should” може стояти на початку речення:

  • Should the situation change, we will contact you.
    (Якщо ситуація зміниться, ми зв’яжемося з вами.)

Це аналогічно до: If the situation changes…


D. Використання “I should” для порад

1. Давання порад

“I should” використовується для вираження порад.

Приклади:

  • Shall I leave now?
    No, I should wait a bit.
    (Ні, я б зачекав(-ла) трохи.)
  • I shouldn’t stay up too late. You have to be up early tomorrow.
    (Я б не сидів(-ла) занадто пізно. Тобі потрібно рано вставати завтра.)
