Unit 4: Present Continuous and Present Simple 2 (I am doing and I do)

Present Continuous

1. Використання continuous форм

Ми використовуємо continuous forms (I’m waiting, it’s raining тощо) для опису дій, які почалися, але ще не завершилися.

  • know, like, want, need, prefer, believe, understand, remember, belong, seem тощо.

They are liking.

Present Simple

like I like chocolate. (не “I’m liking”)
want I’m hungry. I want something to eat. (не “I’m wanting”)
understand Do you understand what I mean?
seem Anna doesn’t seem very happy right now.

B. “Think” у Present Simple і Present Continuous

Present Simple.

  • What do you think of my idea?
  • I think Mary is Canadian, but I’m not sure.
  • not: I’m thinking Mary is Canadian.

Present Continuous.

  • I’m thinking about what happened.
  • Nicky is thinking of giving up her job.

C. Використання Present Simple із see, hear, smell, taste

Дієслова see, hear, smell, taste зазвичай використовуються в Present Simple, а не в Present Continuous.

  • Do you see that man over there?
not: Are you seeing that man?
  • The room smells. Let’s open a window.
  • This soup doesn’t taste very good.

  • You look well today. або You’re looking well today.
  • How do you feel now? або How are you feeling now?

Present Simple:

  • I usually feel tired in the morning.
    not: I’m usually feeling tired.

E. “Being” у Present Continuous

Ми використовуємо am/is/are being для опису поведінки, яка відбувається зараз.

  • I can’t understand why he’s being so selfish.
  • Don’t worry. I’m being very careful.

He’s being selfish right now. He’s selfish.
I’m being very careful today. I’m a very careful person.

  • Sam is ill.
*(Сем хворий.) not: Sam is being ill.
  • Are you tired?
*(Ти втомлений(-а)?) not: Are you being tired?
