Unit 52: Question Tags (do you? isn’t it? etc.)

A. Що таке “Question Tags”?

“Question tags” –

  • You haven’t seen Lisa today, have you?
  • It was a good film, wasn’t it?
  • Karen plays the piano, doesn’t she?
  • You didn’t lock the door, did you?

У “question tags” використовуємо допоміжне дієслово (have, was, will тощо).

Kate will be here soon, won’t she?
Joe should pass the exam, shouldn’t he?
There was a lot of traffic, wasn’t there?

They don’t like us, do they?
You haven’t eaten yet, have you?

C. Значення відповідей “Yes” і “No”

You’re not going out this morning, are you? Yes (я виходжу) / No (я не виходжу)
You don’t like coffee, do you? Yes (мені подобається) / No (не подобається)

D. Інтонація в “Question Tags”

  • It’s a nice day, isn’t it?
  • Paul doesn’t look well today, does he?
  • Lisa’s very funny. She’s got a great sense of humour, hasn’t she?

  • You haven’t seen Kate today, have you?
  • You don’t know where Karen is, do you?

E. “Question Tags”

  • You couldn’t do me a favour, could you?
  • You don’t know where Karen is, do you?

1. “Let’s…” → “shall we?”

(Давай…), “question tag” – shall we?

  • Let’s go for a walk, shall we?

2. “Don’t…” → “will you?”

Після Don’t (заборони) “question tag” – will you?

  • Don’t be late, will you?

3. “I am…” → “aren’t I?”

Після I am… “question tag” – aren’t I? (не amn’t I?).

  • I’m right, aren’t I?
