Unit 53: Verb + -ing (enjoy doing / stop doing etc.)

  • I enjoy reading books.
  • Would you mind closing the door?
  • Chris suggested going to the cinema. (не suggested to go) (Кріс запропонував піти в кіно.)

enjoy (насолоджуватися) I enjoy reading at night.
mind (заперечувати) Do you mind waiting for a moment?
suggest (пропонувати) She suggested going by train.
stop (зупинятися, припиняти) He stopped smoking last year.
finish (закінчувати) Have you finished writing the report?
recommend (рекомендувати) I recommend taking the bus.
admit (визнавати) He admitted stealing the money.
deny (заперечувати) She denied cheating in the exam.
avoid (уникати) Try to avoid driving at night.
risk (ризикувати) He risked losing everything.
consider (розглядати, обмірковувати) Have you considered moving to another city?
imagine (уявляти) Can you imagine living on an island?
fancy (хотіти, уявляти) Do you fancy going out tonight?

B. Негативна форма: not + -ing

  • I enjoy not having to wake up early on weekends.
  • He avoided not telling the truth.

1. Give up (кидати, припиняти)

  • I’ve given up eating fast food.

2. Put off (відкладати на потім)

  • Don’t put off telling him the truth.

3. Go on / carry on (продовжувати)

  • She wants to go on working after retirement.
  • He carried on talking despite the noise.

4. Keep / keep on (продовжувати, постійно щось робити)

  • You keep interrupting me!

D. “Verb + somebody + -ing”

  • I can’t stop people talking about it.
  • I remember her saying that she would come.
  • Sorry to keep you waiting.

E. Having + past participle (having done)

  • They admitted having stolen the money.
  • I now regret having said that.

I now regret saying that.

  • They denied (that) they had done anything wrong.
  • Chris suggested (that) we go to the cinema.
  • I recommend (that) you travel by train.
