Unit 54: Verb + to (decide to … / forget to … etc.)


A. Дієслова, після яких вживається “to + infinitive”

Деякі дієслова вимагають to + infinitive (інфінітив із “to”) після себе.

agree (погоджуватися) He agreed to come to the party.
refuse (відмовлятися) I refused to pay the bill.
hope (сподіватися) We hope to see you soon.
decide (вирішувати) They decided to take a taxi.
plan (планувати) We plan to travel next year.
arrange (домовлятися, організовувати) I arranged to meet her at noon.
manage (змогти, вдалося) She managed to finish the project on time.
deserve (заслуговувати) He deserves to win the award.
afford (дозволити собі) We can’t afford to buy a new car.
fail (не вдалося) She failed to pass the exam.
promise (обіцяти) He promised to call me later.
learn (вчитися) I learnt to swim when I was five.
threaten (погрожувати) The company threatened to fire him.
tend (мати схильність) He tends to talk too much.
forget (забувати) Don’t forget to lock the door!

Приклади:

  • It was a long way to walk, so we decided to take a taxi home. (Було далеко йти пішки, тому ми вирішили взяти таксі.)
  • Simon was in a difficult situation, so I agreed to help him. (Саймон був у складній ситуації, тому я погодився йому допомогти.)
  • I waved to Karen, but failed to attract her attention. (Я помахав Карен, але не зміг привернути її увагу.)
  • Dan tends to talk too much. (Ден має схильність занадто багато говорити.)

B. Заперечна форма: “not to”

Приклади:

  • We decided not to go out because of the weather. (Ми вирішили не виходити через погану погоду.)
  • I promised not to be late. (Я пообіцяв не запізнюватися.)
  • Dan tends not to listen when people give him advice. (Ден має схильність не слухати, коли йому дають поради.)

C. Порівняння “to + infinitive” та “-ing”

Деякі дієслова вимагають -ing після себе, а не to + infinitive.

Приклади:

  • I enjoy reading books. (не enjoy to read)
  • Andy suggested meeting for coffee. (не suggested to meet)
  • Are you thinking of buying a car? (не thinking to buy)

D. Dare (насмілитися)

Дієслово dare може вживатися як з “to”, так і без нього.

Приклади:

  • I didn’t dare to tell him. або I didn’t dare tell him. (Я не насмілився йому сказати.)

Але у заперечній формі dare not (daren’t) використовується без “to”:

  • I daren’t tell him what happened. (не I daren’t to tell)

E. Дієслова “seem, appear, pretend, claim” + to-infinitive

Деякі дієслова, такі як seem, appear, pretend, claim, вимагають “to + infinitive”.

seem (здаватися) They seem to have plenty of money.
appear (виглядати, здаватися) She appears to be tired.
pretend (вдавати) He pretended not to see me.
claim (стверджувати) She claimed to have seen a ghost.

Приклади:

  • Ann pretended to be reading the newspaper. (Енн удавала, що читає газету.)
  • Have you seen my keys? I seem to have lost them. (Ти бачив мої ключі? Здається, я їх загубив.)
  • She claimed not to have seen me. (Вона стверджувала, що не бачила мене.)

F. Питальні слова (what/how etc.) + to-infinitive

Деякі дієслова можуть бути поєднані з питальними словами (“what, how, where” тощо) + to-infinitive.

know (знати) Do you know where to go?
decide (вирішувати) We haven’t decided what to do yet.
remember (пам’ятати) I remembered where to find it.
forget (забувати) Don’t forget how to use this device.
learn (вчитися) She is learning how to drive.
explain (пояснювати) Can you explain what to do next?
understand (розуміти) I don’t understand what to say in this situation.
wonder (цікавитися, задумуватися) I wonder whether to call him or not.

Приклади:

  • Have you decided where to go on holiday? (Ви вже вирішили, куди поїхати у відпустку?)
  • I don’t know whether to apply for the job or not. (Я не знаю, подавати заявку на роботу чи ні.)
  • Do you understand what to do? (Ти розумієш, що робити?)

G. Verb + somebody + what/how/where to do something

Дієслова show, tell, ask, advise, teach можуть поєднуватися з what, how, where + to-infinitive.

Приклади:

  • Can somebody show me how to use this camera? (Хтось може показати, як користуватися цією камерою?)
  • Ask Jack. He’ll tell you what to do. (Запитай Джека. Він скаже тобі, що робити.)
  • My father taught me how to swim. (Мій батько навчив мене плавати.)
