Unit 57: Verb + -ing or to… 2 (try, need, help)

A. try to… vs. try + -ing

1. try to do = спробувати щось зробити (зусилля, спроба)

  • I was very tired. I tried to keep my eyes open, but I couldn’t.
  • Please try to be quiet when you come home. Everyone will be asleep.

2. try + -ing =

  • These cakes are delicious. You should try eating one.
  • The photocopier doesn’t seem to be working.
    Try pressing the green button.

try to do Докладати зусиль для досягнення чогось I tried to move the table, but it was too heavy.
I didn’t like the way the furniture was arranged, so I tried moving the table to the other side of the room.

B. need to… vs. need + -ing

1. need to do = необхідність виконати дію

  • He needs to work harder if he wants to make progress.
  • I need to call my mom.

2. need + -ing =

  • My phone needs charging.
  • Does your suit need cleaning?

need to do Особа має зробити дію I need to clean my shoes.

  • My phone needs to be charged.
  • Your suit needs to be cleaned.

C. help to do / help do vs. can’t help doing

1. help (to) do = допомагати виконати дію

  • Can you help me move this table?
  • Can you help me to move this table?
  • Everybody helped (to) clean up after the party.

2. can’t help doing =

  • I don’t like him, but he has a lot of problems. I can’t help feeling sorry for him.
  • She tried to be serious, but she couldn’t help laughing.
  • I’m sorry I’m so nervous. I can’t help it.
