Unit 60: Preposition (in/for/about etc.) + -ing

A. Прийменник + -ing

Якщо після прийменника (in, for, about тощо) вживається дієслово, то воно завжди має закінчення -ing.

  • Are you interested in working for us?
  • I’m not good at learning languages.
  • Kate must be fed up with studying all the time.
  • What are the advantages of having a car?
  • Thanks very much for inviting me to your party.

be good at I’m good at playing chess.
be fed up with I’m fed up with waiting.
the advantages of What are the advantages of studying abroad?
thanks for Thanks for helping me.

B. before -ing, after -ing

Після before та after використовується дієслово з -ing.

  • Before going out, I phoned Sarah.
  • What did you do after leaving school?

  • Before I went out, I phoned Sarah.
  • After you left school, what did you do?

C. by -ing (як щось сталося)

  • You can improve your English by reading more.
  • She made herself ill by not eating properly.
  • Many accidents are caused by people driving too fast.

D. without -ing (без того, щоб зробити щось)

  • We ran ten kilometres without stopping.
  • It was a stupid thing to say. I said it without thinking.
  • She needs to work without people disturbing her or without being disturbed.

E. to + -ing (look forward to doing something

“to” не завжди означає інфінітив (“to do”)!

  • I prefer driving to travelling by train. (❌ to travel)
  • Are you looking forward to going on holiday? (❌ to go)

Типові вирази з to + -ing:

look forward to I look forward to meeting you.
be used to I’m used to getting up early.
get used to She is getting used to living alone.
prefer -ing to -ing I prefer swimming to running.
