A. Використання The, коли є лише один такий об’єкт

Ми використовуємо the, коли є лише один такий об’єкт у світі:

✅ Have you ever crossed the equator? (Є лише один екватор.)
✅ Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina. (Кожна країна має лише одну столицю.)
✅ Our apartment is on the tenth floor. (У будівлі є тільки один десятий поверх.)
✅ I’m going away at the end of this month. (Цей місяць має тільки один кінець.)

Також ми використовуємо the зі суперлативами (найдовший, найкращий, найстаріший):
✅ What’s the longest river in Europe? (Бо річка єдина в цій категорії.)
✅ This is the best restaurant in town!

B. Порівняння The та A/An

Порівняймо:

✅ The sun is a star. (Сонце – це зірка, одна з багатьох.)
✅ The hotel where we stayed was a very old hotel. (У світі багато старих готелів.)
✅ We live in an apartment on the tenth floor. (Одна квартира серед багатьох.)
✅ What’s the best way to learn a language? (Бо є тільки один найкращий спосіб.)

C. Вирази з The

Є вирази, де the завжди використовується:

✅ I love to look at the stars in the sky. (Але: There are millions of stars in space.)
✅ Do you live in a town or in the country?
✅ The earth goes around the sun, and the moon goes around the earth.
✅ Which is the planet nearest Earth? (Якщо маємо на увазі Землю як одну з планет.)

D. Спеціальні випадки з The

1) The cinema, the theatre, але TV без The

✅ I go to the cinema a lot, but I haven’t been to the theatre for ages.
✅ I watch TV a lot, but I don’t listen to the radio much.
✅ Can you turn off the television, please? (У значенні телевізора як пристрою.)

2) The internet

✅ The internet has changed the way we live.

3) The у випадках зі словами breakfast/lunch/dinner

❌ What did you have for the breakfast? → ✅ What did you have for breakfast?
❌ We had the lunch in a very nice restaurant. → ✅ We had lunch in a very nice restaurant.

Але якщо є описовий елемент, то The додається:
✅ We had a wonderful dinner.
✅ She made a big breakfast.

4) Номери кімнат, платформ, сторінок без The

✅ Our train leaves from platform 5. (Але: The train leaves from the main platform.)
✅ Do you have these shoes in size 43?
✅ Turn to page 29 in your book.
✅ You need vitamin A for good vision.
