A. Випадки, коли не використовуємо “the”

1. Вулиці, площі, парки, дороги

Ми не використовуємо артикль “the” перед назвами вулиць, доріг, площ і парків:

Приклади:

  • I walked through Hyde Park yesterday. (Я гуляв через Гайд-парк учора.)
  • Their office is on Fifth Avenue. (Їхній офіс знаходиться на П’ятій авеню.)

2. Назви громадських установ

Для деяких громадських установ, коли перше слово є іменем місця або людини, артикль “the” не використовується:

Порівняння:

❗ Але:

  • The Royal Palace (Тут “Royal” – це прикметник, тому артикль потрібен.)

3. Назви закладів, що закінчуються на ‘s або s’

Магазини, ресторани, банки та інші заклади, названі на честь людей, не вимагають артикля:

4. Церкви та релігійні споруди

Церкви, названі на честь святих, не використовують артикль “the”:

5. Назви компаній та авіаліній

Назви компаній, авіаліній і технічних брендів вживаються без артикля:

Приклади:

B. Випадки, коли використовуємо “the”

1. Готелі, театри, музеї та відомі будівлі

Для більшості інших будівель та установ ми використовуємо артикль “the”:

Скорочення у вживанні:

  • Зазвичай опускають іменник у розмовній мові: the Sheraton (замість the Sheraton Hotel), the Palace (замість the Palace Theatre).

2. Назви з “of”

Коли у назві є слово “of”, ми завжди використовуємо артикль “the”:

Ми використовуємо артикль “the” з назвами газет, міжнародних організацій та відомих установ:
